Black History Month: Showing Respect

In honor of Black History Month, we asked athletes around the state to recognize a mentor, coach, family member, or local leader who they view as a role model – someone who has inspired them. Polk County athlete Briana Sheffield chose to recognize her mother, Carolyn Sheffield.

My mom is important to me because she taught us valuable skills. She taught us always to be respectful and to consider others. You never know what others may be going through. Even though we didn’t have a lot growing up, she would always try to provide the best for us. Despite some health challenges, she has always remained positive. She is incredibly selfless and would give you the clothes off her back if you needed them.
